Former Arsenal defender Mathieu Debuchy has this evening been named the Ligue 1 Player of the Month for February.
Former French international Debuchy arrived at Arsenal from Newcastle United in 2014, but endured a tough time in North London over the course of his 3-year spell.
Despite some promising early performances, Debuchy quickly fell victim to Arsenal’s long-running injury curse during his debut campaign with the club, spending a number of lengthy spells on the sidelines during both the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons.
He was sent on loan to Bordeaux for the second half of the 2016/17 campaign, but again struggled for both form and fitness.
As such, after managing just 7 appearances for Arsenal in various cup competitions over the opening half of the current campaign, the Gunners agreed to terminate Debuchy’s contract in North London, allowing the 32-year-old to return to Ligue 1, this time with Saint-Etienne.
And Debuchy has since enjoyed a sensational start to life with Les Verts, notching 2 goals in his 6 league outings for the club, inspiring Saint-Etienne to impressive draws with both Marseille and Lyon amid a 6-game unbeaten streak.
Debuchy’s brilliant form has certainly not gone unnoticed in his home country, as evidenced by the fact that the veteran has this evening beaten off competition from the likes of PSG superstar Neymar to be named the Ligue 1 Player of the Month for February:
