Supporters of Manchester United have taken to social media to turn on manager Jose Mourinho this evening, following the Red Devils’ shock Champions League exit at the hands of Sevilla.
The two sides went head to head at Old Trafford, having played out a 0-0 stalemate in the first-leg of their Champions League last-16 tie in Spain 3 weeks ago.
Manchester United have been in excellent form since their disappointing showing at the Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium, having earned victories over all of Chelsea, Crystal Palace and, most recently, Liverpool.
Sevilla, meanwhile, have picked up 2 wins and 2 losses from their 4 fixtures since the clash, including a harrowing 5-2 defeat at home to Atletico Madrid and a 2-0 loss to Valencia in their last outing.
The starting XIs of both sides were announced an hour prior to kick-off, with Jose Mourinho having sprung a couple of surprises.
Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial were seemingly only fit enough for the bench, while Juan Mata and Scott McTominay both dropped out for Jesse Lingard and, controversially, Marouane Fellaini:

Sevilla, meanwhile, lined up as follows:

The opening 45 minutes this evening saw both sides struggle to create clear-cut chances, with Sevilla midfielder Steven N’Zonzi the standout performer in a half badly lacking in quality.
Manchester United’s fans were understandably up in arms regarding the flat performance of their side, with the lack of control gained by Nemanja Matic and Marouane Fellaini in the middle of the park particularly noteworthy.
The second-half saw United come out with more intent in attacking areas, but look susceptible to Sevilla on the counter-attack.
And it was a Sevilla counter that saw the score opened for the first time in over two and a half hours between the tie’s two legs, as substitute Wissam Ben Yedder made an immediate impact, taking the ball into his path on the edge of the box and brilliantly slamming home past David De Gea.
Incredibly, it was 2-0 just minutes later, as a corner flicked on to the back post saw Ben Yedder cement his name in Sevilla’s history books, heading home past the unlucky De Gea and putting the tie out of United’s reach.
Romelu Lukaku did manage to restore a glimmer of hope for the hosts with 5 minutes to go, but it was too little, too late, as Manchester United crashed out of the Champions League in embarrassing circumstances.
As was to be expected, fans of the Red Devils have since taken to Twitter to make their frustrations known, with the vast majority of the abuse understandably aimed in the direction of Jose Mourinho, who’s defensive, negative approach finally came back to bite him:
The only person to blame is the Manager. It doesn’t matter that it’s Jose Mourinho. Wrong tactics, wrong players. #MUFC

Only Mourinho is to blame for this result. Tactics wrong from minute 1, firing balls up to Fellaini not the answer.

Never seen such a bad couple of performances than this. Always playing a dangerous game when you don’t score an away goal. Mourinho has to take responsibility. Fucking tripe

An absolutely ludicrous approach to the entire tie, and nothing less than Manchester United deserve. Miserable from Jose Mourinho, and we have to assume this is his doing.

Well, turns out you can’t shithouse your way to the Champions League like you can the Europa League. Mourinho has the answer to his question.

Man United get exactly what they deserve. Mourinho has got this so so wrong.

Honestly, Mourinho only has himself to blame for this

You know what’s the worst thing about this? People will still somehow find excuses for Mourinho. This Sevilla team is average this season, La Liga teams are toying with them. And in this tie, they looked like Pep’s Barça.

This is down to Jose Mourinho’s selection and decision from the outset.

Absolutely terrible performance due to horrific management by Jose Mourinho. Sevilla will go out next round whoever they play. Only slight consolation is we were never going to win it anyway. Embarrassing defensive approach by Mourinho.

This one is absolutely on Mourinho. He’s over-complicated a second round tie to a mediocre Sevilla side who can’t defend for toffee. You’d hope he’ll learn a lesson from this, but you doubt it.

This tie is 100% Jose Mourinho’s fault.
Tried to shithouse his way and got found out.
